"The way of the future, the way of the future, the way of the future...."
These were the final words echoed by Leonado DiCaprio's obsesive compulsive character Howard Hughes in the movie the Aviator. The movie had long been on my netflix queque list and continued to get bumped from the number one spot over the last few months. I should have watched it sooner, it was not what I expected at all. But what I'm left with after devoting two hours and fifty minutes of my life to my living room couch and a Klondike ice cream sandwich was the final ten seconds of the film. "The way of the future, the way of the future, the way of the future...". The words were burning into my psyche, speaking to me, doing the riverdance on my mind. But it's meaning is encrypted, teasing me, like that wrapped Christmas gift under the tree a week early when I was ten. "The way of the future, the way of the future, the way of the future....". Will the answer come in a sudden moment of clarity? Perhaps years from now I will know the answer but have forgotten the movie. Maybe the words will stick with me forever and the answer to their mysterious meaning will hit me moments before I die and I will learn that the answer could have prevented my iminent death. Nah, that's too cynical...sounds like something Alanis Morissette would write a song about.
Perhaps, the message is relevant now. Perhaps, its encrypted meaning is not encrypted at all. Maybe it only seems encrypted because nobody can say for certain what the future holds. How the future is defined lies in the way we consume the present. If our eyes are always fixed on that which is yet to occur it is bound to rob us of our present joy. If we are robbed of our present joy we will soon look to the past with regret.
"The way of the future, the way of the future, the way of the future....".
Its application in my life? Live in the now. All paths, all decisions are the way of the future. It's meaning was just hidden in plain sight!
